7 Energy Considerations for Material Handling Automation?
2021-05-12 / Brand Activity

Here is a list of 7 energy-related questions to ask when considering the use of automated material handling equipment.

1. What is the weight/size of the unit load processor compared to the unit load to be shipped?

Consider using shuttles and small loading cranes for handling and storage. The shuttle, however, weighs much less than the crane.

2. How does the device make full use of the vertical space of the building?

On average, lighting and HVAC account for 70% of a warehouse's power consumption. Utilizing the vertical space of the building reduces the footprint that requires lighting and HVAC facilities.

3. What auxiliary equipment is needed?

When comparing power consumption between multiple technologies, be sure to also consider differences in auxiliary device requirements. For example, a person-to-object system may be more energy efficient than its competitors, but it may also require more auxiliary conveyor belts than competing technologies.

4. Can the device recover energy during use?

A growing number of technologies can restore energy when it is slowed down or reduced.

5. How does the supplier's estimated power consumption rate differ from what you will encounter in your operations?

Observed technical power consumption rates can vary significantly between different customer sites. Work with your supplier to understand how your business needs may cause your power consumption rates to differ from their estimates.

6. Does the equipment provide you with the flexibility to reduce your demand for electricity during peak hours?

Most warehouses are charged by the utility for the higher average amount of electricity they use for a small period of the month, usually 15 minutes. This "demand charge" can account for 30-70% of the total monthly electricity bill. Using a battery-powered device can help you reduce the amount of electricity you need because you can charge the battery during low load times in the plant, such as overnight. In addition, devices with soft-start motors and variable speeds prevent a sharp rise in power consumption.

7. Does the device provide power metering?

A deep understanding of your system's power consumption characteristics can provide you with feedback on how operational changes affect your facility's power needs.
